St. Patrick’s Day is a fun day, here are some facts you might not know…

1. The very first St. Patrick’s Day parade was not in Ireland. It was in Boston in 1737.
2. In Chicago, on St. Patrick’s Day, the rivers are dyed green.
3. In Seattle, there is a ceremony where a green stripe is painted down the roads.
4. Many people wear green on this holiday to avoid being pinched.
5. The phrase, “Drowning The Shamrock” is from the custom of floating the shamrock on the top of whiskey before drinking it. The Irish believe that if you keep the custom, then you will have a prosperous year.
6. Many bars in the United States, and abroad, serve green beer to celebrate St. Patty’s Day.
7. In 1996 the Irish government finally decided to celebrate the holiday like we do in the U.S.A., with beer, fun, and frolic, by hosting the St. Patrick’s Day Festival. Today, Ireland is home to some of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Better late than never.
8. The luck of the Irish was with George Washington in 1776 when the British evacuated Boston on St. Patrick’s Day leaving the Americans to take over the city.
9. The Shamrock Shake was introduced in Ireland’s McDonalds in the 1980s. These green-colored milkshakes quickly made their way to United States and are a seasonal favorite around St. Patrick’s Day.
